The Mississippi Public Health Institute (MSPHI),  a nonprofit organization based in Ridgeland, MS whose mission is to engage in partnerships and activities to improve the health of Mississippians,  is seeking a Workforce Development/Substance Abuse Prevention Strategist to coordinate training and technical assistance activities for the substance abuse and treatment workforce under a grant from the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. Position:  Substance Abuse Prevention Strategist for Workforce Development; 100 % FTE


Position Description: This is a highly responsible position which requires a mature results-oriented person who can assist in developing a comprehensive, evidence-based, data-driven workforce development program for professionals working in the substance use disorder (SUD) field.  The ideal candidate should have exceptional organizational skills, strong work ethic, demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the substance use disorder field with specific experience in prevention; be able to connect with, gain the respect of and have credibility with substance use disorder professionals; comprehensive knowledge of developing training plans and content and possess strong facilitation skills with the ability to deliver workshops online and in-person. The ideal candidate will have experience in Learning Management Systems (LMS), knowledge of adult learning theory and experience applying for continuing education units. He/she should possess the ability to cultivate and maintain stakeholder relationships, work independently and with teams, be proficient in Microsoft Office and other software, have the ability to work under limited supervision and demonstrate proficiency in cultural competence.


Candidates meeting the required qualifications for the position will be evaluated based on reference checks, training delivery, technological and writing skills.



Duties and Responsibilities:


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Workforce Development team (Senior Workforce Development Advisor, Workforce Development Manager , Technical Support Specialist and Administrative Assistant) to develop efficient infrastructure for facilitating Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (SAPT) workforce development activities as outlined in the Workforce Development grant with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health
  • Develop cutting-edge professional development, education and training to build capacity regarding service provision to the project’s Spokes and Community Mental Centers.  Topics will focus on combating the opioid crisis, treatment and prevention services, pregnant and postpartum women issues as well as their children and families
  • Assist in assessing the training and educational needs of the SAPT workforce and use information to develop evidence-based, culturally appropriate, interactive in-person and online training content that responds to adult learning styles
  • Engage in cross-training on substance abuse prevention and participate in prevention workshops
  • Select and/or develop training aids including handouts, PowerPoint presentations, modules and other relevant aids
  • Ensure evaluation of workforce development training and use relevant evaluation data to revise or recommend changes in instructional objectives and methods
  • Assist in securing subject matter experts who possess appropriate credentials, can develop and/or deliver online and in-person training utilizing adult learning theory and culturally appropriate training content
  • Become proficient in the LMS and ensure that all content is branded with workforce development logo, content utilizes adult learning principles and all components are working effectively for users (log in, CEU certificates, etc.)
  • Assist in developing content for a Workforce Development training catalog
  • Use social media to engage participants and promote SAPT Workforce activities
  • Promote Workforce Development at designated conferences and meetings
  • Assist in the development of informational brochures, resource articles, and written materials
  • for training purposes
  • Assist in preparing, collecting and processing pertinent information to allow participants to earn CEU’s
  • Respond timely to calls, emails and requests for assistance
  • Respond timely to requests for onsite training and assist with coordinating onsite training and regional workshops for SAPT professionals
  • Pursue instructor certification in CRP, CPI, Naxalone, Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPTS) and other trending topics as needed
  • Assist in identifying other training opportunities and resources for professionals and publicize on Workforce Development Web site
  • Ensure that all workforce development materials, Power Points, Web site and training content is consistent with the Workforce Development brand
  • Prepare reports and evaluation information to submit to funder
  • Stay current on SUD trends, best practices, pursue and maintain  credentials and participate in opportunities for professional development
  • Other duties as directed and necessary to fulfill project goals


Qualifications: Master’s Degree or higher in Public Health, Communications, Administrative Services, Healthcare Administration, Social Services, or related field.  SUD Credentials such as Certified Prevention Specialist/Manager CPS/CPM; Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) and others. Candidate should possess at least five years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.


Supervisory Relationships: The WDS will report to the Workforce Development Manager

Amount of travel and other special conditions or requirements:  Moderate travel statewide (Occasional evenings and nights)


Salary and benefits : $52,500-$60,000 based on experience. Paid holidays, 403b retirement plan. No health and dental benefits available at this time.
