The Mississippi Public Health Institute (MSPHI) will assist the Mississippi State Department of Mental Health – Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Services (BADS) with implementation of technical support services for Mississippi Prevention Alliance for Communities and Colleges (mPACC). mPACC aims to alter alcohol and prescription drug consumption patterns, consequences, and risk and protective factors by funding up to seven Community Prevention Coalitions (CPCs) to serve an estimated 394,165 adolescents and 344,900 young adults from diverse social and cultural backgrounds per grant year. MSPHI will provide data analysis, coordinate a media campaign and deliver coalition development training.
In an effort to provide data on the attitudes and risk behaviors of adolescents, MSPHI works with the schools across Mississippi to survey students in grades 6-12. SmartTrack, a computer-based survey, includes topics such as drugs, alcohol, mental health, attitudes toward school and other risks. Data from the survey are used by schools, school districts, prevention planners and policy makers to acquire funding and drive decisions related to Mississippi youth.
MSPHI also provides prevention services to Madison county. Through evidence-based practices, social media campaigns and innovative technology techniques, the Prevention Specialist targets high risk populations based on data gathered through the SmartTrack survey.
The opioid epidemic has had a profound effect on the citizens of Mississippi in relation to overdose deaths, economic impact, and behavioral health. Also, in partnership with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, MSPHI provides essential workforce development and data analysis for the State Opioid Response grant. This data is used throughout the state to determine funding, policy, and strategic planning.
In partnership with the Mississippi Department of Health through the Overdose Data to Action grant, MSPHI provides essential prevention services to the state. Utilizing grass roots methods, high risk communities are developing coalitions for planning strategic change in their communities. In addition, MSPHI is working with Coastal Family Health to develop systems to support pregnant and parenting women in referral, treatment and recovery.
