The Jackson Safer Childbirth Experience (JSCE) is a member of the 2019 inaugural class of the Merck for Mothers Safer Childbirth Cities Initiative, which supports ten projects in ten cities across the country to help end preventable maternal deaths. Merck for Mothers and the Kellogg Foundation are funders of the JSCE. The initiative will reduce disparities by promoting health equity and will work with doulas and perinatal support workers to bolster the care support system around women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.
We have the opportunity to expand pregnancy and birth support teams in the Jackson, MS metropolitan area and focus on issues that increase our maternal death and illness rates. Expecting families are receiving support from community-based doulas, people they know and trust. This includes breastfeeding coaching, learning labor positions, and new approaches to monitoring a pregnancy’s health.
Families receive doula services at no cost to them! We are also providing clinicians and nurses with additional tools to support families. This program is designed for Black pregnant women in the Jackson, MS metropolitan area, as well as their families, the providers who care for them and their birth support teams.
